NETFLIX HAS ANNOUNCED ITS MATERNITY LEAVE POLICY, AND IT IS PROBABLY
THE MOST PROGRESSIVE THING I HAVE SEEN FROM A PRIVATE COMPANY
IN THE UNITED STATES IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES.
THEY ARE NOW OFFERING UNLIMITED MATERNITY AND PATERNITY LEAVE
DURING THE FIRST YEAR AFTER A CHILD IS BORN. RIGHT NOW, IN
THE UNITED STATES, THERE IS NO RULE OR REGULATION THAT GIVES
MANDATORY MATERNITY OR PATERNITY LEAVE, SO IT’S VERY, VERY
ADMIRABLE THAT NETFLIX HAS TAKEN IT UPON THEMSELVES TO HAVE SUCH
A PROGRESSIVE POLICY WITHIN THEIR COMPANY. BUT NOW THEY
HAVE DONE THIS, IT HAS LED TO OTHER COMPANIES CHANGING THEIR
OWN POLICIES THAT ARE, OF COURSE, MUCH MORE FAVORABLE TO
MEN AND WOMEN WHO WISH TO HAVE CHILDREN. BUT LETíS FOCUS ON WHAT
NETFLIX IS DOING SPECIFICALLY. “DURING THAT FIRST YEAR, NETFLIX
EMPLOYEES WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE OFF HOWEVER LONG THEY FEEL THAT
THEY NEED TO. THEY CAN RETURN ON A FULL OR PART-TIME BASIS,
AND CAN EVEN TAKE SUBSEQUENT TIME OFF LATER IN THE YEAR IF
NEEDED. NETFLIX WILL KEEP PAYING THEM NORMALLY,
ELIMINATING THE HASSLE OF HAVING TO SWITCH TO DISABILITY LEAVE,
THE COMPANY SAYS.” I LOVE THIS. I HOPE OTHER COMPANIES FOLLOW SUIT. IíM GOING TO CENK IT UP.
IT’S TOO MUCH. NO IT’S NOT. I LIKE THEM BEING ABLE TO
TAKE THE TIME, BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO KEEP PAYING THEM. I GOT
THAT, THEY’RE NOT WORKING, YOU CAN PAY THEM THREE MONTHS, AT
THAT POINT ñ MY WIFE’S COMPANY, SHE HAD A GOOD MATERNITY LEAVE. AFTER THREE MONTHS THEY GAVE HER
THE OPTION OF EXTENDED LEAVE. THEY SAID, YOUR JOB IS NOT GOING
AWAY, WE’RE NOT GOING TO PAY YOU, BUT TAKE THE TIME YOU
NEED AND COME BACK WHEN YOU WANT, BUT WE’RE NOT
GOING TO PAY YOU. IF THEY’RE GONNA PAY ME AND I
GET TO FIGURE OUT, I’M GONNA GET A JOB AT NETFLIX AND TAKE A YEAR OFF AND HAVE ANOTHER KID. WHEN YOU HAVE POLICIES
THAT ACTUALLY TREAT YOUR EMPLOYEES AS HUMAN BEINGS WHO
HAVE LIVES OUTSIDE OF WORK, THEN PEOPLE WANT TO
WORK FOR YOU. THAT IS WHAT IS GOING TO
HAPPEN AT NETFLIX. THAT’S WHY COMPANIES LIKE GOOGLE,
FACEBOOK AND NETFLIX DO SO WELL, IN TERMS OF HIRING THE
BEST OF THE BEST, BECAUSE THE BEST OF THE BEST WANTS
TO WORK FOR THEM. I GUESS. NETFLIX, IT SAYS, MANY TECH
COMPANIES INCLUDING NETFLIX OFFER UNLIMITED PAID
VACATION TIME. THAT WOULD BE A DISASTER
AT THE YOUNG TURKS. I WOULD COME IN ON THURSDAY
THERE WOULD BE FOUR GUYS HERE. THAT’S TRUE. FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, TYT
IS KEEPING TRACK OF OUR VACATION TIME, BECAUSE SOME
PEOPLE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF IT. NOT TOO HAPPY ABOUT THAT. SHE SAID BITTERLY. I DON’T UNDERSTAND UNLIMITED
PAID VACATION TIME. PEOPLE CAN TAKE A PAID
VACATION IF THEY WANT, AND I GUESS THE PRODUCTION GOES UP
WHEN THEY COME BACK, BECAUSE THEY ARE ENERGIZED AND WANT TO WORK. EVERY TIME I TAKE A VACATION,
I CAN’T WAIT TO GET BACK TO WORK. I’M ENERGIZED, I CAN’T
WAIT TO DO IT. ONE OF THE REASONS I’M DETERRED FROM HAVING
CHILDREN IS BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE RESULT OF THAT WOULD
BE. I DON’T KNOW WHAT OUR MATERNITY LEAVE POLICY IS. I
KNOW SOMEONE JUST HAD A KID IN THE COMPANY, AND THEY TOOK OFF A FEW
MONTHS AND EVERYTHING IS FINE. I DON’T KNOW IF HE WAS GETTING
PAID DURING THAT TIME, BUT ALL THAT UNCERTAINTY CAUSES STRESS.
PEOPLE WHO ARE WORKING FOR A COMPANY THAT IS MUCH LESS
PROGRESSIVE THAN TYT ARE PROBABLY EVEN MORE WORRIED ABOUT IT. SO, NETFLIX IS SETTING A
TREND, AND AS A RESULT THERE ARE SOME BIG COMPANIES THAT ARE
CHANGING THEIR POLICIES. MICROSOFT IS ONE OF THEM.
“UNDER ITS NEW POLICY, MICROSOFT WILL INCREASE PAID LEAVE TO
TWENTY WEEKS, AND EIGHT WEEKS OF UNPAID LEAVE.” NEW FATHERS ALSO GET AN INCREASE
IN THE TIME THEY CAN TAKE OFF. THEY WILL GET TWELVE
WEEKS INSTEAD OF FOUR. MICROSOFT IS DOING SOME
GOOD STUFF AS WELL. I LOVE THIS, AND I HOPE
THAT THE TREND CONTINUES. TWELVE WEEKS WITH A NEW
KID, THAT’S NOTHING. YOU KNOW HOW OLD THEY ARE AFTER
TWELVE WEEKS? TWELVE WEEKS. THREE MONTHS, IT’S
